Framing Glass: The Basics Every Artist Should Know   by Susan Slobac

Artists spend many years honing their crafts, but when the day comes that they decide to sell some of their artwork, there is a whole other realm to discover in terms of framing the artwork. One important component of the framing process and materials used is the framing glass. Framing glass, which can also be called glazing, comes in glass and acrylic varieties, and may also include other good features, as can be found with non glare picture frame glass.

The basic purpose of photo frame glass is to protect the surface of the artwork. This protection provided by framing glass is needed for many reasons. Framing glass can help to keep oils from fingerprints as well as dirt and dust particles from damaging the art. Photo frame glass is also used to keep the mat and mount board securely positioned within the frame. Specialized non glare picture frame glass can help make it easier for viewers to see and appreciate your artwork within the frame.

Picture framing glass may be made from acrylic or actual framing glass. Actual picture framing glass is very strong and scratch resistant. Some of photo frame glass’s less-desirable features are that it can easily break, it often has a greenish tinge that can affect the appearance of the artwork and it is heavy, which can make it an unworkable option for those framing a large photo that will be hung on the wall. Many people choose acrylic picture framing glass because it is lightweight but sturdy, making it a good candidate for use within a hung picture. Acrylic is more susceptible than actual glass to scratches, but it is quite clear, and acrylic art framing glass can come with archival-quality features that will go toward it helping to prevent artwork surface damage due to ultra-violet lights or pollution.

When using glazing in a picture frame, you will also want to use some type of mat board. This will not only add an attractive edging to your artwork, but will also raise the glass up off the surface of the artwork. This is important, because if moisture gets trapped between the glass and art, it can damage the surface. The matboard provides a little buffering zone of air, which will help to protect the artwork even more.

It is a good idea to visit a fine art photography framing supplier online. Websites such as these feature all manner of art framing glass, and give all the specifications for each, so that you can make a good decision about which will most suit your purposes for the piece of artwork in question.
